Our History
PG Printmaker Gallery has been operating as a Gallery at our current site in Melbournes Brunswick St, Fitzroy, since 1974. Originally as a partnership between Margie Burnet and Neil Wallace until Neil left the business in 2000 when Margie became the sole Director. (How To Find Us)
At a time when there were very limited resources for printmaking the aim was twofold: to provide the materials to produce works and a venue to sell the completed images. Instead of selling via exhibition the new Gallery would sell off the wall. Printmaking is a process, it takes a lot longer than other mediums to prepare a body of work for Exhibition, and the customer would also have the advantage of immediate acquisition.
While primarily started to assist Australian printmakers, we soon found our artists travelled a lot and met and had interesting Collaborations with artist in Studios in many countries. We embraced these possibilities and now the Gallery contains are very diverse selection, including works from indigenous communities.
The fledgling business soon outgrew its space and the Printmaking materials component, Melbourne Etching Supplies, moved to it's new location. Melbourne Etching Supplies is now located a few minutes walk away at 33 St. David St, Fitzroy.
Since those early days there have been many prints created and sold, Exhibitions held, frames made. Thousands and thousands of people each year have explored our walls and folios learning the different qualities of an etching, lithograph, screen print, mono print, woodcut or lino cut. (To find out more visit the Print Glossary. This will open in a new window.)
